Object Name Cannonball
Description Cannonball, circa 1814. Very heavy metal cannonball (over 4 pounds) and 3" in diameter. This cannonball was recovered from the Tarbox family pasture after shot there by the "HMS Bulwark" during Biddeford's famous skirmish in the War of 1812. The "Bulwark" was a 74-gun ship of the Royal Navy, and at 150' with two decks of guns, would have been quite imposing to see in Saco Bay. The Tarbox cannonball was handed down over generations, and when the property left the Tarbox family it was passsed along to the new owner, Mr. Arnold Cote. Mr. Cote donated the cannonball to McArthur Library to help permanently commemorate this important historical event in Biddeford's history.
