Description |
U.S. flag flown by Capt. Waldo Hill on his ship and at his residence near Fort Hill during the War of 1812. Seven feet square, with 15 stripes and 15 stars (one for each state). Believed made by women of the neighborhood in 1814 while militiamen were stationed at Capt. Hill's house after the British warship Bulwark raided the Pool on June 16, 1814. Given to the Smithsonian Institution in 1942 by heirs (in Georgia) of Captain Waldo Hill. It is believed to still be in the collections of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.
