The yacht "Sokokis", 1902. George McArthur at the wheel; Henry Evans at the landing port. Built on the floor of National Hall for the library fair and manned by the following crew: Captain, Harry P. Chadbourne; 1st Officer, G.M. Leavitt; 2nd Officer, S.L. Parcher; 3rd Officer and Purser, Henry D. Evans; Quartermaster, George McArthur; Stewardesses - Ada L. Boynton, Susie Roberts; Seamen - Francis Healy, James Burnham, Roy Verrill. In February 1902 a big fair was held in National Hall, St. John's Building, to raise money to equip the McArthur Library. The fair lasted an entire week, during which a special newspaper called "The Nightly Comet" was published each day. The fair was actively attended and supported, and more than $15,000 was raised for the Library Fund. |
