Description |
Looking from Main Street and Alfred Street, towards Bacon Street, circa 1870. "The Alfred Street business district, as can be seen from the trees in the background, then ended at Bacon and Jefferson Streets. The church steeple was the Methodist church at the corner of Bacon and Alfred Streets, where the Central Theatre now stands. In 1870 the Methodist congregation built a new church (the present Foss Street Methodist Church) and the old building shown in this picture was occupied by St. Joseph's Parish at first as a church, and later as a school. Later Still the old church was occupied by the Atkinson Furniture Store, and then was remodelled in 1916 into the Central Theatre. See reverse side of this picture for front view of Old Methodist Church (corner of Bacon & Alfred Sts)" [Written in the 1940's. Central Theatre is now Biddeford Police Station.] |
