Description |
Early view of Biddeford's City Building (1860-1894), Main and Adams Streets, circa 1870. Cornerstone was laid July 4, 1860. This shows the building prior to the addition of the bell tower, and before the addition of telephone/electrical poles in the city. Also visible is the original portico of the Biddeford House/Thacher Hotel, with a horse and carriage parked along-side. Various businesses operated here, including the First National Bank, York County Savings Bank, Hartford Insurance, Small's Insurance, and the post office. An interesting note is the large overhanging bay window of the wooden building just next door. This is a copy negative; the location of the original photograph is unknown. |
