Pavilion Congregational Church, Biddeford, circa 1865. The Masonic Building was not built next door until 25 years after this picture was taken. "The Pavilion Church (the Third Congregational Church) was organized in 1857 and services were held in the hall over the offices of the Pepperell Mills for several years. Pavilion Church (Third Congregational Church of Biddeford), circa 1870. This is the current McArthur Library building as it looked in 1870, when occupied as a church. Note the new, young trees which have been planted out front, along with a fence, which dates this as a little later than image 629. The building was started in 1863, and all (including the steeple and clock) were completed in 1865.

The Pavilion Church (later McArthur Library) as seen through the ruins of the Shaw Block, which burned on May 28, 1872. The Shaw Block was a large frame block built in 1868 by Charles A. Shaw, whose theatre occupied part of the upper stories. The block was on the south side of Main Street, beginning at Jefferson Street and running nearly half was to the City Building.

Second-floor auditorium of the Pavilion Congregational Church, Biddeford, circa 1880. This auditorium was used by the McArthur Library as a public auditorium for concerts, graduations, and other events from 1902 to 1935, and was known as McArthur Hall or McArthur Auditorium. All library services were offered on the ground floor. Since 1935 it has been the Senior Library and Reading Room.
