    City Building, Main and Adams Street, Biddeford, 1888. At this time the Post Office and First National Bank were both located in the City Building, along with offices and the City Opera House. The rounded corner of the Thacher Hotel/Biddeford House is visible, without its portico. This shows the building both after the belltower was added and after the addition of electrical and telegraph/telephone poles to the city in 1887.

    Hotel Thacher, Main Street, Biddeford, 1955. Built in 1847 and opened as the "Biddeford House", this brick block with 100 rooms was the largest hotel in York County at the time. The name was later changed to honor Biddeford's famous Judge George Thacher, who was member of both the Continental Congress and then the first U.S. Congess in 1789.

In 1855 there was railroad service between Biddeford and Boston (the trip took 5 hours) but stagecoach lines were still running to Portland, Old Orchad and Kennebunk as well as to Alfred, Buxton, and Fryeburg.
